Teaching Language

Behaviourism
First I want to create a save environment, using behaviourism to realise this.  I want the pupils to feel safe, allow them to make mistakes, because that is when the learning process starts. As it also has been proven to be the most successful method  for easy memorized materials, I will also use it for this purpose.

Communicative method and Lexical approach
Moreover, I want to be a teacher who teaches from the heart, not from a book. Therefore I would like to teach with the communicative method in combination with the lexical approach.  These two methods appeal the most to me and I will enable me to teach the students language in an effective way. That is directly applicable for them in their personal live and with a little creativity, also in their professional live!

The communicative method provides the students with nice and everyday topics, like going to the cinema, the weather and making a reservation – topics that will appeal to them, so they will feel the need to learn the new words, grammar and spelling. Because of this appealing effect they will broaden their vocabulary on these various topics with more fun and they will therefore be more engaged.

The lexical approach is a method of using/learning multi-word phrases like: brush your teeth, commit a crime or lexico-grammatical patterns like Have you ever…..?  The most common past participles that occur with this strict structure are: been/seen/had/heard/tried.  I believe, by combining these two methods, the effectiveness of the lessons will increase.

Silent method

I would like to use the silent method when working on the assignments. The information the pupils need to know, are written down on the blackboard or PowerPoint. In this way I can help them being less dependent on me.

Of course we have to take in account  the curriculum of the course. So therefore I will you use the course book as a manual and will use all the good elements of it, but if I think that I will benefit the students with different assignments, I will feel free to do so. The reason for having this point of view is that after analysing a chapter of the course book that we use at my TP school, is that the assignments don’t add up for all the 8 MIs (Rosie Tanner)  the students have.

Receptive method
As the assignments from the work book are sometimes not really attractive for the students, I will look on the internet to find some nice topical listening and reading assignments for them. Because of these more suitable topics they will more easily absorb the information and the English language.

I want to show my students that studying can be fun and doesn’t have to be dull. So I want to have variety in my lessons with drama, interactive assignments to stimulate them to embrace the English language, socio-cultural topics and history in an effective and stimulating way.
